Every year there are players who take a large step forward in their Draft season, pop-up prospects as they're generally known. Barker has been one of those players in the Four Corners. After not being seen much on the summer showcase circuit, Barker started showing off his raw tools as his Casteel High School made it to USA Baseball's National High School Invitational semifinals, and that continued this spring as Casteel advanced to the second round of the Arizona state playoffs. Barker is a super-athletic left-handed hitter who plays the infield in high school. Everything about him is a little raw, but there are glimpses of him doing everything well. It's a hit-over-power approach, and those who like him see an average hit tool in there, though he'll have to continue to add strength to his 6-foot-1 frame to get to more impact, even if he's never a huge power guy. The one purely plus tool he has is his speed, and some scouts have seen 70-grade run times from him occasionally. Where Barker best profiles defensively is also a question. He has some abilities to play short but had been seeing most of his time on the dirt at third base this spring. His bat might not profile well for the corner infield spot, and his overall defense needs work, with some thinking he might fit in a 3B/2B/LF kind of role. Those who like him are all about projection, but some think he'd be better off going to Texas Tech, where he'd be a Draft-eligible sophomore in two years.
