MiLB Intelligence
READINESS
Single-A Assignment
The official assignment is Single-A. IQDugout displays the assignment as development context, not as an MLB-readiness grade.
CALL-UP OUTLOOK
Not Determined
Level alone cannot support an individual call-up judgment. Performance, health, roster status, role fit, and organization need would also have to be evaluated.
PROJECTION
Starting Pitcher
This is the player's currently listed role or position context, not a prediction of a future MLB role.
DEVELOPMENT RISK
Not Graded
Development risk is not graded from league level or draft year alone.
Ceiling is withheld until supported player-specific scouting or performance evidence is available.
Floor is withheld because a league assignment does not establish a player's likely outcome.
Organization rank: Unavailable from current official MLB data
No exact or broad ETA is shown without supported individual performance, development, health, and roster evidence.
DEVELOPMENT TREND
Full-Season Development
The current official assignment is Single-A. Assignment level is factual context and is not treated as proof of promotion readiness.
IMPROVEMENT AREAS
- Evaluate sustained performance with level and age context
- Review role fit, health, roster status, and organization need
SCOUT REPORT
Like his older brother Connor before him, Ethan Norby is an undersized star at East Carolina who draws rave reviews for his competitiveness. While Connor was a sweet-swinging infielder who went to the Orioles in 2021's second round en route to the big leagues, Ethan is a left-hander with one of the better sliders in college baseball. He didn't quite live up to expectations this spring but still could factor into the top three or four rounds. Norby's high-spin 79-82 mph slider features plenty of sweep and depth, and it was outstanding when he struck out a Pirates-record 19 against eventual College World Series runner-up Coastal Carolina last March, though it can get roughed up when it catches too much of the plate. He's throwing a tick harder this year, parking at 91-92 mph and topping out at 95 with his fastball, but it isn't missing as many bats with its carry as it has in the past. He's struggling to land his tumbling mid-80s changeup for strikes, while his mid-80s cutter lags behind the rest of his repertoire. The 5-foot-10 Norby leans into his lack of size by getting down the mound and using a three-quarters arm slot to create a low release height and good shape on his pitches. His slingy delivery and short arm action add to his deception without compromising his control or fastball command, though he hasn't been quite as sharp as he was as a sophomore. He profiles best as a slider-happy reliever but his aptitude and makeup could make him a back-of-the-rotation starter.
