Calhoun barely pitched as a Mississippi freshman and handled a middle-relief role as a sophomore before getting trusted with higher-leverage situations on a Men's College World Series team this spring. Though he has made just two starts in three college seasons, some evaluators are intrigued by the idea of moving him to the rotation in pro ball. His baseball lineage extends further back than most, as his great-grandfather Chick Green played for the Rebels in 1914 under coach Casey Stengel, who went on to become a Hall of Famer as a big league manager. Calhoun's fastball usually ranges from 93-95 mph and maxes out at 97, missing a lot of bats with explosive carry and some armside run. He uses five different pitches, and his best secondary options are an upper-80s cutter and a low-80s slider with depth. His upper-80s changeup and his upper-70s curveball play as average offerings. There's a bit of effort in Calhoun's up-tempo delivery that hampers his ability to locate his pitches where he wants. He has improved his strike throwing during his time in Oxford, but he still has below-average control and fastball command. He has five viable pitches and some projection still remaining in his 6-foot-4 frame, so he'll have no shortage of suitors.
