After a solid high school career at California powerhouse Huntington Beach, Aceves headed to UC Santa Barbara, where he pitched effectively in relief as a freshman, earning NCBWA Freshman All-America Second Team honors in the process. In 2026, scouts could come watch the Gauchos back-to-back, getting first-round prospect Jackson Flora on Fridays and Aceves following him the next day. Aceves wasn't as dominant as his rotation-mate, though the All-Big West Honorable Mention starter did win an essential elimination game to propel Santa Barbara to an NCAA Regional final. Scouts who like Aceves point to his combination of size at 6-foot-3 and arm strength. The right-hander pitches with a fastball that sits around 93-95 mph, but he can reach back for 96-97 on occasion. His best pitch is his plus changeup, thrown around 85 mph, that can fall off the table with serious fade. He can get to an average upper-70s curve and he has an upper-80s slider he throws less frequently. While Aceves tends to generally be around the zone, his command is probably average at best. There's some concern with his delivery mechanics and less-than-clean arm stroke, with some inversion and unorthodox arm positions as a result. There's enough interest in the arm strength here to imagine Aceves will hear his name called at some point on Day 2.
