Peterson pushed his fastball to 94 mph as a Tennessee high school senior in 2023 but was still raw on the mound, so he headed to Walters State (Tenn.) CC. He helped the Senators finish second at the 2025 Junior College World Series before transferring to Appalachian State, where he was named Sun Belt Conference Newcomer of the Year in '26. He notched 107 strikeouts (second-most in school history) in 85 innings and blanked Men's College World Series participant Troy for seven innings in May. Though Peterson still tops out at 94 mph and his heater sits at 91-92, it generates plenty of chases and empty swings because it comes out of a high arm slot with tough carry at times and steep downhill plane at others. None of his secondary pitches stand out, with his low-80s changeup with depth more effective than his breaking balls. His low-80s slider works better than his 75-78 mph curveball. Peterson's metrics pop more than his stuff, as he uses his 6-foot-5 frame to create an unusually high and wide release point, and also some natural extension. He lacks a smooth arm action and consistent timing in his delivery, so he'll battle the strike zone on occasion. If a pro team can help him increase his velocity and refine a complementary option, he'll have a plus fastball and a better chance to succeed as a starter.
