Rhudy throws a lot of fastballs and he throws a lot of strikes. That approach worked for two seasons at Kennesaw State and continued to bring him success in the Southeastern Conference, college baseball's best league, after he transferred to Tennessee for his junior season. He compiled a 3.38 ERA and 41/6 K/BB ratio in 32 innings while ranking among the NCAA Division I leaders in fastball rates of chases (41 percent), swings and misses (35 percent) and in-zone swings and misses (28 percent). Rhudy's heater sits at 91-93 mph and reaches 96, but hitters can't lay off it or catch up to it despite its below-average velocity. His fastball is special because he creates huge spin rates and significant carry coming from a low release height and flat approach angle. He utilizes it about 70 percent of the time while employing a tight upper-70s slider to throw off batters' timing. The extension in Rhudy's low-three-quarters delivery adds to his deception. He pounds the strike zone and ranked third in D-I in overall (72 percent) and fastball (77 percent) strike percentage. He's purely a reliever but his unhittable heater might make him a high-leverage option, especially if a pro team can help him gain more velocity.
